Potluck #56: To Tweet or Not To Tweet...Twitter

Exercises
1) Browse a couple of different Twitter profiles (news, fashion, celebrities) and read through a few updates. Do you think this is something you would adopt for personal use? Is there a particular topic you'd like to tweet about?

I browsed several profiles, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, CNN breaking news and several others. I kinda like it, I'm going to use if for a while and see how it goes. There is not a particulat topic that I'd like to tweet about yet, but who know, maybe I'll discover something new.

2) Use the search feature to find tweets about a topic that interests you. What were the results?

I did look up some authors that I like , Janet Chapman, Karen Marie Moning and shel silverstein and I found people tweeting about them, their latest books and about events.

3) Post your thoughts about Twitter to your blog. For help navigating through Twitter, see their support page.

I created an account and even linked it to my cell and I sent my first mobile tweet! This is fun!

Maps #33: Relocating with Online Maps

Activity 1:

I really like HAR. You can search for houses in a specific area. They have great pictures and the virtual tours make house hunting so much easier. I looked at lots of the houses that are for sale in my neighborhood. I had used the site before but not since they have made some changes. I like the new changes, it is easier to move around, loads faster.

Activity 2:

I chose 2435 Vintage Cir, because it was the most expensive. The page lists the school district as Fort Bend. The house has its own pool so I won't need to walk to the Country Club near by. This site also has links for near by places, the community, even a calculator to help you figure out if you can afford it. I would definately recommend HAR to anyone looking for a new place to live.

Maps #32: Current Events

Activity 1:

Question:

I have a rather large piece of land that I just inherited from my Uncle George. After looking at it I really feel that it is very plain. I think that if I were to put a crop circle on it it will have a better look and feel to it. Can you tell me where I can go to see what my property might look like with a crop circle?

Answer:

Go to this website, http://www.mapmsg.com/send/cropcircle/ for help in viewing what an area would look like with a crop circle.

Activity 2:

The School Incident Map - http://www.safeplans.com/schoolmap/ - was very disturbing. I had no idea that there were so many incidents at schools in the United States. The amount of bus accidents is concerning.

Maps #31: Have Map, Will Travel

This was fun. This is a map of my hometown. This would be great when planning a trip. You could us it in conjuction with so many things. You could use it when working on Genealogy, you can map out where family lived.

Sound: #25: Am I a music pirate? It's hard to know...

There are so many rules for this!! The first time penetaly for illegally copying music, five years in prison and/or $250,000 in fines, is quite scary!

Ok, I'm gonna have to go home and try and burn a CD. I believe the hardest part will be 1. seeing if my computer will still do this function and 2. finding a CD. This is something that I have never needed to do before. Seems a little archaic when we can download to the MP3 player.

I will report back! ----Ok, I'm back... That is not something I will ever do again (unless I really, really have to!) It is so much easier to use a an flash drive.

On the sharing music. --- Do you think music and musicians benefit more from strict copyright protections online or free and open sharing?

With the little that I understand I think the musicians would benefit more if there are strick copyright protections online. After all they are in the business to make money.

ihcpl the next generation - Sound: #24: The sound of music!

I'm really excited to continue on with all that we are learning! I have my mp3 player and I have books on it now it is time to learn how to download music to it!

I took a look at the different sites and I really can't see myself using it enough to pay a monthly fee. I listen to books all the time and would not listen to very much music. But.......it would be nice to have some on there just in case the mood strikes me!

My boys have used Napster in the past and my daughter who has an ipod uses itunes. My choice will be Amazon. Because I am familiar with the site, I can pick and choose and pay as I go. I will give it a try later.

I find when going to download something the hardest part is just picking one!

Ok.....reporting back.

It was easy to download music to my mp3 player. From a pay site and from the library site. But, I have had prior experience, so that helps.

Now I can listen to Nickelback any time I want!

I don't really listen to the radio that often, so I don't have a favorite. I did go to KILT and it is so easy to listen online. Just one click.
